It was wonderful to wake up this morning and feel better, after being horribly sick for the past two weeks. So much so that I actually made my favorite breakfast, called my mum, then proceeded to make cupcakes and clean the house. Quite an achievement - being able to eat and keep it down [yay!], talk without choking or sounding like a giant croaking frog, being headache-free for long enough to concentrate on a recipe - even just being able to walk around without clutching my stomach, head or chest is a breakthrough. As is being awake and fully conscious of my surroundings. This mysterious illness started out as a 5-day stomach-flu which then evolved into a full-blown cold turned sinus infection, followed by some kind of chest + throat thing. The good news is that our US health insurance just took effect. A little late, but nice to know that we can now reap the rewards of paying $400 a month for my plan. Setting up health insurance has been one of the most overwhelming aspects of our move to the US - we know nothing about it and can't get over just how expensive it is. A quick look at the potential cost of NOT having insurance is enough to scare us into acceptance.

It seems that winter has changed to spring during my two-week absence from the real world. When we first came to California, I was amazed that the trees still lost their leaves despite the hot + sunny weather. Regardless of my understanding that seasonal changes are largely dependent on the amount of sunlight available rather than temperature alone, the 'seasonal experience' has felt a bit like the twilight zone for me. Imagine what the height of summer feels like, smells like, looks like. But the trees are bare. Until today that is. The tree outside our house has tiny little buds. The first [and only] sign that spring is here.

I've been admiring lots of 'morning' images - which inevitably include several yummy breakfast photos - Stephanie [little birds handmade] and Mav's [port2port] project, 3191, as well as simply photo's new blog, simply breakfast. Feeling inspired by these beautiful morning shots [and my new sense of well-being], I thought I'd take a photo of my favorite breakfast. A soft-boiled egg with buttered toast and tea. This has been a favorite of mine since my mum told me about reading 'Peter Rabbit' to her younger sister at bedtime, then sneaking downstairs to make a boiled egg, toast fingers and hot chocolate as a midnight snack for the two of them. I *love* this story so much that my previous aversion to eggs has been cured, and I rarely make myself anything other than this for breakfast. The hot chocolate has been replaced by tea - although I love hot chocolate, it would probably send me right back to sleep and I wouldn't be Scottish if I didn't have at least one cup of tea a day, would I?

More chocolate cupcakes...last time they disappeared rather quickly [*J* took them to work], so hopefully these will stick around long enough for me to have one...
